Creativity is a gift from a creative God.
God is
constantly creating anew and we are invited to do the same.
Creative Spirits is a brand new group forming at St. John's.
The idea was brought to life by members of Pastor Bill's Memorial Committee.
The original plan was to purchase large, colorful banners to install in the
glass windows in the atrium. As often happens, that plan took a more
exciting path! We now realize that we need to encourage our own congregation
to express their imagination, hope and faith through different facets of
art. We will be making the banners ourselves with the help of God! Finishing
the banners will not be an end to a project, but rather the beginning of a
new ministry of spiritual formation through creativity.
Our first gathering will be a brainstorming session to generate ideas for
the banners and get to know each other. For some, creativity is as natural
as the beating of a heart. Others, who do not see themselves as "artists" in
the usual sense, are also creative. Artistic skills are not necessary, what
is important, is living creatively and believing the world can be as God
would have it.
The next step will be the actual creation of our vision. The materials used
will be very simple, just as bread and wine are transformed into amazing
symbols through communion, mere paint, paper, fabric or other raw materials
become something born anew. The hand of the artist is evident. We sense
stitches, or brush strokes, or edges or any of the other qualities of the
hand at work, and that communicates passion, vigor, and caring. Perfection
is not necessary.
Don't underestimate what can happen when we are moved by the Spirit to give
life to our dreams, What we create may be breathtaking! And if it's not,
that's okay . . . we won't be afraid to try again.
"A dream is in the mind of the believer, and in the hands of the doer. Your
are not given a dream, without being given the power to make it come true."
